How to Identify and Fix Common Window Drafts

There’s nothing more frustrating than feeling a cold breeze sneak through your windows in the middle of winter or noticing hot air escaping during summer. Drafty windows make your home uncomfortable, and they also mean that you’re paying more to heat and cool your home.

Fortunately, most drafts are preventable and can be fixed with a few simple steps. Here’s how to identify where your windows are leaking air and what you can do to stop it.

How to Identify Window Drafts

Before you can fix a draft, you need to find it.

  1. The Flame/Smoke Test

Light a candle or incense and move it around the edges of your window frame. If the flame flickers or the smoke wavers, air is sneaking in. This method works best on a calm day indoors.

  2. Hand Test

Put your hand near the edges of your window on a cold or hot day. You’ll often feel a noticeable flow of air.

  3. Spot the Signs

Check inside and out for things like cracked glass, gaps in the frame, and damage to your weatherstripping. You might also notice condensation buildup or frost forming on cold days, which can mean a leak.

  4. Check During Extreme Weather

Strong winds are a great way to identify leaks. On a windy day, walk around your windows and check for areas where air enters your home.

How to Fix Window Drafts

Here are practical solutions:

  1. Replace or Add Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is a cheap, fast fix that can work for gaps around the sash and frame. However, make sure you get weatherstripping that matches your window type.

  2. Use Caulk

For cracks between the window frame and wall, use a high-quality exterior caulk. Clean the surface first, then apply a continuous bead along the gap and smooth it with your finger or a caulk tool.

  3. Repair/Replace
  1. Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Windows

If your windows are old, replacing them may be your long-term solution. Modern windows from Rusco feature double- or triple-pane glass and tight seals that virtually eliminate drafts.

Drafty windows are a sign that your home is losing comfort and costing you more. By identifying leaks early and sealing them, you can enjoy a more comfortable living space and lower utility bills.
